The Czech Center of PEN International, a worldwide association of writers, strongly condemns the March 7 decision of Hachette Book Group not to go ahead with the imminent publication of Woody Allen's autobiography “Apropos of Nothing” by its Grand Central Publishing imprint. Regardless of feelings any individuals or groups may have about Mr. Allen and his personal life, a decision to silence a major filmmaker and author who has done more than most to explore the lifestyles, personal dilemmas and inner lives of contemporary Americans, and who has not been convicted of any crime, can only be understood as an unprecedented attack on freedom of expression and creative liberty, routinely granted to murderers, embezzlers, drug lords and other criminals.
